Captain Planet Lives Here!

I have to tell you all something that not many people know- Captain Planet lives at my house!  For years, before it was cool, my husband  recycled bits and pieces of our household waste. For a long time we laughed quietly at the things that he’d pull out of the garbage after us. We’d have neighbors and friends over to cook out and he would set out two garbage containers. One for garbage and one for cans and bottles. Our dear guests don’t always understand his system and often discard in the wrong bin. And… it never failed the next morning we were awakened by the cling and ping of bottles and cans being sorted into their appropriate home.  Bless his heart, he was sorting away and  it didn’t matter that they may have been coated in dried BBQ sauce or an occasional bean.

But then it became clear that recycling was not only cool but is the right thing to do .  Now we recycle everything – paper, magazines, tin foil, plastic, cans, bottles, and – we have a compost pile. When I am busy in the kitchen not only do I have the Rachel Ray GB (garbage bowl) I also have a CB (compost bowl) and a RB ( recyle bowl). Half of my counter space is eaten up with destination bowls – I think I need counter extensions for my bowls.  

Occasionally I have things that do not fit into the CB or RB but I hate to put them in the GB. This would include things like stale bread or a mistake batch of cupcakes or cookies. My husband is convinced that the chubby little squirrels and birds that reside in our yard don’t get enough to eat during the winter. So he finds joy in placing it all outside in “their spot”.   I had a good chuckle the other day. He had run outside to drop off a bowl of winter food and came back in and said there was a squirrel outside standing upright with a cupcake cupped in his hands like he’d just found gold! I don’t know if that squirrel was smiling but I was – and it sure would have been a great picture to use in future advertising campaigns!   

We have alot of recyclable materials in our home and it just makes sense take care of the planet.  We have been doing it for years but since October our pick up service monitors what we recycle and gives us reward points.  We’ve not redeemed them yet because  the real rewardis knowing that since October what we’ve recycled has saved 9 trees and 605 gallons of water – and that is just 4 months.  WOW!  That make me proud.  I think I am going to go make a Captain Planet Cake right now!

In closing a fact that we can all relate to – Did you know, the Hershey Company in the US produces about 20,000,000 kisses each day using 133 square miles of aluminum to wrap them in; this material is recyclable and most of it ends up in the trash rather than the recycle bin. Intersting fact!  Recycle.

Welcome Back…

One of the many ways I distribute good home cooked meals is to do lunches at local office buildings where they do not have in-house food service.  I am set up to do a couple of these per week and really enjoy talking to my “regulars” week after week.

I haven’t been there in a while due to the holidays, vacation and weather. So today I cooked, loaded up, set up and fed the masses.  Man it was good to be back and even better …  all of my customers who said “we’ve missed you and we are so glad you are back”.  To them, thank you!  You made me feel so good and your appreciation is why I do what I do.

Cookin’ Up A Storm

On these snow days my business has been a little slow but it’s given me the opportunity to get caught up on some things. There are exciting new additions to the website that should be posted by the end of the week. Don’t worry, we’ve not taken away any of the great stuff, just added more of it!

I also added to the catering menu and that will be posted soon as well. Remember if you want a Casserole To Go, you can look at the catering menu and pick your entree. They come in two sizes as indicated on the website under the tab. I hope that you take advantage of this service after a long day at work.  It’s nice to know there is a home-cooked meal waiting for you, that you didn’t have to prepare.

I managed to find the recipe for German Brown Bread that belonged to my grandmother. So this morning when I couldn’t sleep at 4am, I was up making bread – which led to Creme Brulee!  Did I tell you that I love to cook?  I find it such a great way to be creative and to me it is very theraputic – except for doing the dishes part. Needless to say the days of my long manicured nails are long gone.  

I have many of our family recipes on hand but am working on gathering more and more of them. They are such an important part of our family history. There are certain foods and smells that remind you of people in your life. Every time I smell bacon I think of my grandmother in Texas – which make me think of her chocolate cream pie, her black-eyed peas, and she always had a pitcher of Tang in the refrigerator for me!  My grandmother up north was German and I remember her rolling out strudel on the kitchen table and making blood sausage and raw dog for my dad and uncles. Oh they loved that!  Not sure I will be offering that anytime soon. 

I want my kids and sister to have the same memories of eating here.  And I want to be able to pass along all of these family heirlooms to them.

Snow Days…

I know that most people are not loving  the cold and snow that we are ”blessed” with this week.  Having grown up in the midwest with endless drifts and biting winds, moving to Tennessee 12 years ago was a welcome relief. Or so I thought. We moved into our home in December and I was stunned when I went out on our back deck and saw the most beautiful roses blooming in December. And I was informed that we could have flowers all winter long. Are you kidding me?  I was used to cold and ice and brown and dreary.. I must admit that I was a big fan of no snow except for Christmas, for many years. Then you just wish we’d get that one big snow. The one that keeps us all inside snuggled up with hot chocolate and a fire. The one that affords us the chance to stay in our jammies and watch Lifetime movies with the dogs snoring beside us! I have to say that I’ve enjoyed the past couple of days. I’ve been able to relax a little bit but more exciting than that – I’ve been trying new recipes.  We have more food in this house than we will ever eat!  We went on a Western Carribean Cruise over Christmas so I came back with some great recipes from the cruise line. I made a Coconut Curry Chicken that was just so delicious and followed that up the next day with Polenta and Balsamic Mushrooms, Fresh Spinach and Pine Nuts.  Both were as good as I remember in our on board cooking demo. So then I decided to do more – I was on a roll!  Made lots of cookies for the kids hot chocolate, tried a new recipe for Spiced Mixed Nuts (which I am adding to the menu) , my grandmothers brown bread which is a combo of sweet and savory and I am getting ready to roll out some homemade pretzels too! 

I love these days where life slows down just a bit and I can roll up my sleeves and get in the kitchen and be creative. I can’t wait to share these new yummies with you!

A New Year!

I am so looking forward to 2011 and all that it will bring. I want to thank you for your business in 2010.  You have been amazing customers and so kind with your compliments and referrals – that is so important to every business owner. I will always strive to give you the best possible food and just as important,  top notch service as I know how important that is – an unfortunately lacking in way too many business’ today. 

This blog is new and I want you to enjoy it. I want to share with you things we are trying, our crazy days, our success’ and probably a whole lot of funny stuff that happens here! 

I just got back from a Western Carribean Holiday Cruise and had a chance to sit and catch my breath.  I had time to watch Julie and Julia and I was inspired on so many levels… what a fantastic person Julia Child was!  I was wishing that I had time to do one new recipe a day a blog about it – but thanks to my customers I do not! But.. I do take an afternoon a week to test new ideas and I will share with you my results. 

Tonight I am in the process of adding new menu items to the catering menu and… adding new cupcake flavors that will blow you away!  Also… be sure to check out our Cupcake Party, Cupcake Bar and don’t forget that we do Cupcake Towers for your special occasion.
